    Wasps and Bees

Wasps do far more good for humans by controlling pest insect populations but they can sometimes build their nest in areas that can be a nuisance to us. All wasps build nests. Whereas bees secrete a waxy substance to construct their nests, wasps create their familiar papery abodes from wood fibers scraped with their hard mandibles and chewed into a pulp. They are distinguishable from bees by their pointed lower abdomens and the narrow “waist,” called a petiole, which separates the abdomen from the thorax.

    Types of Wasps

Wasps are divided into two primary subgroups: social and solitary. Social wasps are colony builders, such as yellow jackets and hornets. They are started from scratch each spring by a queen who was fertilized the previous year and survived the winter by hibernating in a warm place. When she emerges, she builds a small nest and has a starter colony of worker females. These workers then take over expanding the nest, building multiple six-sided cells into which the queen continually lays eggs. By late summer, a colony can have more than 5,000 individuals, all of whom, including the founding queen, die off at winter. Only newly fertilized queens survive the cold to restart the process in spring.

    Social Wasps

A social wasp in distress will let out a pheromone that sends nearby colony members into a defensive, stinging frenzy. Unlike bees, wasps can sting repeatedly. Only females have stingers, which are actually modified egg-laying organs. With this being said, some homeowners will try to remove the nest themselves. Not knowing if they are highly allergic to the venom of stinging insects, this can have serious to life threatening reactions to the body.

    Solitary Wasps

Solitary wasps, by far the largest subgroup, do not form colonies. This group includes some of the wasp family’s largest members. Whereas social wasps use their stingers only for defence, stinging solitary wasps rely on their venom to hunt. Please don’t hesitate to call Vermitek for wasps or bees on your property.

    Carpenter Ants

    Identification

Carpenter ants reside both outdoors and indoors nesting in moist, rotting wood, causing significant structural damage. They do not eat wood; they hollow out tunnels and push out the ”sawdust” out of their nest. Some carpenter ants are black or red in color, their size is based on their role in the colony. Sizes vary from 5/16 inch (0.8 cm) to 1 inch (2.54 cm). Distinctive large jaws, elbowed antennae, smooth and rounded upper thorax, look for a single-segmented pedicle (waist) constricted between the thorax and abdomen.

    Reproduction

Queen lays 9 to 16 eggs the first year and may live up to 25 years. Eggs complete their life cycle in about 6 to 12 weeks.

    Damage

The black carpenter ant is a common invader of homes. In their natural habitat, carpenter ants aid in the decomposition of dead, decaying trees. They normally nest in logs, stumps, and hollow trees. However, the large, dark-colored workers often invade homes in search of food, they may excavate moist, rotting wood and other soft materials (such as foamed plastic insulation board) to make satellite nests. Rarely will the expansion of a nest into a building’s wooden timbers cause structural damage. With that being said, it is important to do a proper treatment by a professional. Homes built in wooded areas are especially subject to infestation.

    Control

The application of insecticide sprays to areas where the foraging ants may come in contact with them will eliminate the colony. It is unlikely that the satellite colony can be eliminated without the use of one or more of the materials applied by professional pest management companies. Locating a carpenter ant nest can be difficult. Don’t hesitate to call Vermitek Pest Control.

    Cockroaches

Cockroaches are incredibly common pests that infest houses and other structures and like to live where there is food, warmth and moisture. Even the spotless homes can have roaches. There are multiple different species of cockroach that can be found in the Ottawa area, most common are German, brown banded. They are mainly active at night. German cockroach infestations most often begin when someone unknowingly brings an infested item into a home or building.

German cockroaches often produce up to 40 eggs in one egg capsule. She can produce 8 egg capsules in a lifetime. Though large enough to be seen, egg capsules frequently escape human detection, as female cockroaches either carry the egg casing until just before the eggs hatch (German cockroaches) or lay the capsules in sheltered areas like cracks, crevices, and debris on the floor. Brown-banded cockroaches even glue their egg cases to ceilings, doors, picture frames, and the undersides of furniture.

Cockroaches can carry salmonella, E.coli, dysentery, gastroenteritis are classic bacterias. With their rapid breeding cycle it can become an infestation very quickly. Call a professional to deal with the situation. Vermitek can help.

Vermitek will inspect your home, including the most likely locations for bed bugs to hide—beds, linens and upholstered furniture. The Life Cycle of Bed Bugs

In order to combat bed bugs, it’s important to understand their life cycle. These nocturnal, dark copper coloured insects can feed on the blood of humans and other warm-blooded animals. Their small bodies allow them to hide in the nooks and crannies of your home, including floor cracks, carpets, beds and upholstered furniture.

    The Egg Stage

A bed bug’s life cycle begins as a milky coloured egg. A female bed bug can lay as many as 500 eggs throughout her lifetime, sometimes 5 eggs per day. Bed bug eggs are approximately 1 millimetre in length, just about the size of two grains of salt. The eggs will hatch within 2 weeks and immature bed bugs begin to feed as soon as they can.

    The Nymph Stage

After 5 molts, a bed bug will begin to resemble an adult bed bug, but is not yet sexually mature. Young bed bug nymphs are a light yellow or tan in colour and older nymphs have begun to replicate the reddish-brown appearance of adult bed bugs. In order to properly complete a molting cycle, a bed bug nymph requires a blood meal. Nymph bed bugs usually molt and become adults within 5 weeks.

    The Adult Stage

After reaching sexual maturity, bed bugs will often feed weekly. The lifespan of a bed bug usually ranges from 4-6 months, but some bed bugs may live up to a year in cool conditions even without food.

    Treating Bed Bugs

Treating bed bugs is an ongoing process. First, the team from Vermitek will inspect your home or business, properly assessing all possible entry points and identifying potential breeding grounds. We’ll look for bed bugs dead or alive, as well as skins cast off during molting, small black flecks of fecal material and eggs.

Depending on our findings, we’ll then implement a bed bug treatment programme designed for your home or business. We’ll use the latest tools and technology to best combat a bed bug infestation. We offer bed bug treatment plans that are safe for you, your family and your pets.

The final step is to monitor your home or business. We’ll work with you to see if the bed bugs return. If they do, the team from Vermitek is only a phone call away.

    Rodents

The successful elimination of a rodent such as mice or rat infestation in or around a house or commercial building often depends on three separate procedures: sanitation, rodent proofing and the eventual elimination of the mice or rats. Although sanitation of the infested area and the rodent proofing of all structures can be time consuming, they are extremely important aspects of an effective rodent control program. Conditions that foster an infestation of rodents must be identified and eliminated before control can be successful. At Vermitek we are experts at rodent proofing your residence or business.

The Norway Rat & House Mouse

The Norway rat and house mouse often live in close proximity with humans and can be serious pests under certain conditions. They can carry and transmit organisms that can cause disease, damage or destroy buildings and electronic equipment by their gnawing behavior, and contaminate surfaces with their waste products.

    Rodent Proofing

Rodent proofing a building consists of changing structural details to deny rodents access to the interior of the building. Openings as small as 1/4 inch can admit mice, and a gap of 1/2 inch will permit young rats to enter a structure. Rugged surfaces such as brick walls or the parting on a cement foundation are ways that mice, even squirrels or raccoons can climb to enter a building. Any wall vent, either it be for dryer, exhaust hood fan or bathroom fan exhaust for example on a brick wall should be screened to prevent rodents from entering. Doors should fit snugly in frames (especially garage doors if attached to the house) or be fitted with sweeps or channels to eliminate openings. Various gaps/cracks should be filled with caulking or wire mesh and sometimes a combination of both. These are some examples for rodent proofing. By calling an expert in this field will help you know what should be done. Not all structures have the same entry points.

How to Know If Rodents Are in Your Space

Evidence of rodents can be determined by one or a combination of specific signs. When in the home, rodents can frequently be heard gnawing on wood or climbing between the walls. They also emit squeaks and can sometimes be heard fighting over food or mates. Droppings can be found along frequently traveled paths, near nesting sites, among food caches or other areas the rodents frequent. The odor of wet or dry urine may also be present in these areas. Footprints or tail marks may be observed on dusty surfaces. Dogs or cats may excitedly probe an area of floor or wall, or any other harborage site, especially if the rodents have recently invaded the area. Rub marks may be found on vertical surfaces such as walls or entrance and exit sites, where dirt and oil from rodent fur leave darkened patches or streaks. Rodents gnaw on a variety of materials such as aluminum, mortar and plastic. Tooth marks or chips of gnawed material may be found around baseboards, doors and windows, cabinets, furniture, or stored materials.

Rodents also gnaw at cracks or small openings in an attempt to enlarge openings and gain access to structures. Nests composed of furniture stuffing, shredded paper or other soft materials, and food caches of nuts and pet food will sometimes be discovered when residents clean out garages, tool sheds, attics, closets or other storage areas. Rodents come in all shapes and sizes, which one do you have? We can help you. Call Vermitek Pest and Wildlife Control.
